The Painting Studio

The main painting studio was built in 1918, separated from the house by an expansive lawn. The studio provided the quiet environment Lindsay needed to create the pen and ink drawings and watercolours and oils which established his reputation.

As a way of relaxing, Lindsay built fine ship models from Elizabethan galleons to great clippers of the 19th century. He was enthralled by the possibility of adventures at sea and often used pirates as a central theme in his art. At night, he would sit at his typewriter writing a novel, essay or one of the many thousands of letters he wrote throughout his long life. Lindsay was always most careful in choosing who would enjoy his lively company in the studio.
