Awash With Colour - Norman Lindsay & His Watercolours
Norman Lindsay - A Master of Watercolour
A new exhibition on display at the Norman Lindsay Gallery from the end of August until November 2009 features more than 25 beautiful Lindsay watercolours which show the progression of his style between 1917 and 1969.
Painting in watercolour requires quickness of mind, dexterity of hand, and perfect control. Few artists had greater technical control of the medium than Norman Lindsay, who, nevertheless, wrote that he discarded more work than he ever completed.
Watercolour painting is one of the most exacting of artistic mediums. Mistakes cannot be corrected as they can in oil painting – once the wash is on the paper every flaw is obvious. Lindsay's watercolours are supreme examples of the medium and he stated that "without complete mastery of the method, beautiful colour is out of the question".
From the wildly theatrical 1920's Eros, and the exotic 1930s East and West, through to Lindsay's last painting in 1969, For King and Parliament, which is also included in this exhibition, Lindsay shows a complete mastery of the medium of watercolour.
Exhibition dates
This exhibition runs from August to November 2009.
